This catalyst product has the composition of Platinum Ruthenium in the alloyed form for the PtRu nanoparticulates that are dispersed on high-surface-area and highly-graphitized mesoporous carbon (MPC).  
As cathode catalyst for anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis, this particular PtRu/C catalyst has been consistently shown to perform better than Pt/C. As shown in the following polarization curve, the performance of this PtRu/C catalyst is 45 mV better at a current density of 1A/cm2 than Pt/C catalyst.  The test was carried out using an NiFeOx anode, an 80um thick membrane at 50°C with 1 molar KOH.


Not going too deep into intrinsic activity, Ruthenium is generally considered a better catalyst than Platinum in alkaline media, particularly for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER). As used in low potential/reductive alkaline environments, the durability of PtRu/C catalyst is vastly different from used as catalysts for oxygen reduction catalyst in PEM fuel cell.

The following graph shows over 1000 hrs of durability test of PtRu/C catalyst as compared to Pt/C catalyst. Both show great stability.

50% PtRu/C catalyst is also commonly for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in direct methanol fuel cell due to its effective methanol oxidation activity, and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) due to its excellent tolerance to CO contaminated hydrogen fuel streams.
