This cathode gas diffusion electrode (GDE) consists of 40% Pt/C catalyst mixed with an anion exchange ionomer, and coated on a carbon paper. It is a crosslinded cathode electrode using a proprietary technology designed for anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis or other related electrochemical applications. One of the big challenges facing AEM electrolysis is the detachment of catalyst from anion exchange ionomer, causing very high degradation rate. This cathode GDE has been crosslinked just to deal with this problem. The crosslinked cathode provides amazing durability in addition to the expected performance from Pt/C catalyst, which is enabling the rapid commercialization of AEM electrolyzers.

It can also be used in anion exchange membrane fuel cell as either anode GDE or cathode GDE.

Product specifications:

Pt metal loading: 0.4mg/cm2

Pt/C: 40% on Ketjen black

Thickness: ~300um with a carbon paper thickness of ~260um

Test results:

The stability of this GDE cathode has been tested by sonicating it in water for 3 hrs at 60 °C with a power of 200 W and a frequency of 40 kHz. The following picture shows the minimal detachment of catalysts from the crosslinked cathode electrode. In contrast, conventional powder catalyst-based cathode would lose significant amounts of catalyst.

The following durability graph shows the longevity aspect of this stabilized cathode GDE for AEMWE applications. This longevity test continued for 8000 hrs with an amazing degradation rate of < 2 microVolt/hr between 2000-8000hrs in a 100 cm2 single cell test.  This durability test was carried out at a current density of 1A/cm2 using 1M KOH at 60°C.

Handling

Handle the product in a clean, dry, low-dust environment.

Wear clean disposable nitrile gloves during handling.

Avoid direct contact with the catalyst/active surface to prevent contamination from oils, sweat, salts, etc.

Do not fold, bend, scratch, or rub the electrode to avoid mechanical damage to the active layer.

Recommended storage: cool, dry, and protected from light, away from heat sources and corrosive vapors.

Standard availability is 30x30cm and 15 x15cm size. Please let us know if you need larger sizes or custom made products at info@electrohy.com.
