AEMWE 5-in-1 MEA Fo/Pt
AEMWE 5-in-1 MEA is an MEA product made for AEM water electrolysis comprising anode electrode, AEM membrane, cathode electrode and PTFE seal on each side. Both anode and cathode electrode are catalyst-coated electrode (GDE), which is also called catalyst-coated substrate (CCS).
The details of the components are as follows:
- Anode: NiFeOx anode GDE using compressed Ni foam substrate with a thickness of ~360 µm (Available separately, please see SKU:1001001)
- Membrane: 80 micrometer reinforced anion exchange membrane (Available separately, please see SKU: 1001005)
- Cathode: Crosslinked Pt/C GDE with a Pt metal loading of 0.4mg/cm2 and a thickness of ~360um (Available separately, please see SKU:1001003)
-
PTFE dimension: 10cm×10cm×300µm
The 5-in-1 MEA is made for AEM electrolysis test by using a standard MEA test hardware (Available separately, please see SKU: 1004001). A KOH solution of 0.2-1M is recommended to circular through either both cathode and anode, or just anode side (also called cathode-dry operation). Please see the graph below for a typical performance that shows a current density of 1A/cm2 at 1.728V cell voltage using 1M KOH solution:

The graph below shows the expected durability of this 5-in-1 MEA. The decay rate after 2000hrs is as low as 2µV/h.

Dimensions of standard available 5-in-1 MEA is shown in the table below.

Activation:
MEA can be assembled as dry. Once assembled, it is recommended to circulate 1M KOH for 24 hours at room temperature (e.g. over 100 mL of the solution for every 100 cm²). Replace KOH solution every 12 hour period. Activation process can be accelerated by heating at 60°C, at which 3 hour period can roughly equal 12 hours at room temperature. Once activated, test can start using fresh KOH solution. Please note that activated membrane needs to be kept under CO2-free environment in order to keep it in OH- (or hydroxide) form. CO2 present in the ambient will naturally convert the hydroxide form of the membrane into carbonate form (which is a common behavior of all of the commercial AEMs) and this will significantly reduce the ionic conductivity of the membrane. Please do not allow the activated membrane to run dry during its operation in the electrochemical cell.
