AEMWE NiFeOx Anode GDE
ElectroHy anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) anode electrode is designed for AEM electrolysis applications. It does not contain any precious metals and uses earth-abundant Fe and Ni as the electrochemically active materials in the form of NiFeOx. Electrochemically active NiFeOx is made on compressed Nickel form to yield a self-supported anode electrode that also functions as porous transport layer. This is also called as gas diffusion electrode (GDE) anode. In the industry, this may also be called or known as catalyst coated substrate (CCS) type of anode. It is meant to be used as-is, without any specific steps required for activation.
Technical specifications:
- Thickness: ~360 µm
- Electrochemically Active Materials: NiFeOx
- Support: Compressed porous Ni foam
Performance:
The following graph shows the nearly perfect performance of this anode in a 3-electrode test.

Electrochemical performance of ElectroHy anodes in a single cell with 1 Molar KOH at 60 deg C is given below. This data demonstrates superb performance both at 0.2 molar and 1 molar KOH and , such as a current density of 2A/cm2 at 1.73V using a 60um Hydroion membrane. Catalytic component of the anode electrode is composed of a proprietary composition and loading of NiFeOx.
Durability test results:
The following durability graph shows the longevity aspect of ElectroHy's proprietary NiFeOx as the anode catalyst for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) applications. This longevity test continued for 8000 hrs with an amazing degradation rate of <2 microVolt/hr between 2000-8000hrs. This durability test was carried out at a current density of 1A/cm2 using 1M KOH at 60°C. HIO stands for H2 in O2.

Instructions:
Both sides of the electrode are active, and there is no directionality or direction dependency. A guillotine trimmer or heavy-duty scissors can be used to cut down the electrodes to smaller sizes. It is important that the sharp points present at the edges of the electrode after cutting are facing away from the anion exchange membrane in order to prevent damage to the membrane during the cell assembly. Alkaline-resistant planar gasketing or O-rings should be used with this electrode during its operation with 1 Molar alkaline electrolytes.
Standard availability is 30x30cm and 20 x20cm size. Please let us know if you need larger sizes or custom made products.
